Coming off her win at the NYRR Staten Island Half Marathon in October, Cathrine Wolden set her fourth straight marathon PR as a Run SMART client at the Cal International Marathon this past weekend. Her official time was 2:51:33 (6:33 per mile), four minutes faster than her last marathon and 22 minutes faster than her PR when she started working with Run SMART coach Alicia Shay.
Even more impressive was the way Cathrine executed her race plan. At the halfway mark her split was 1:26:08 so she came home in 1:25:25 for the second half which is only 21 seconds slower than her half marathon PR! Brilliant! Next stop, sub-2:50.

Run SMART client Cathrine Wolden broke 3 hours for the first time in her bright new marathon career. Coming into the Boston Marathon this year Cathrine had run 3:13:07. Today, she finished in 2:59:31 (6:51 pace)! It was incredible to watch Cathrine’s progress throughout the race. She started around 7 minute pace early and then slowly worked her way down from there throughout the race. She was 1:30:48 at the half so she negative split a very challenging second half course in Boston.
Congrats to Cathrine and her coach Alicia Shay for a brilliantly executed race plan and performance!

After about 30K, five Run SMART clients are on pace to set new personal bests.
Cathrine Wolden has been getting stronger throughout the race, averaging 7:00 pace per mile and now about 6:55 pace through 30k. Boston is known to slow you down on the hills late in the race so this is an incredible development. Cathrine’s previous PR is 3:13 so she’s looking at possibly a 12 minute improvement! Fingers crossed. (more…)
