Bill Horne Gets Redemption At NYC Marathon

When Run SMART client Bill Horne signed up for private coaching this past summer he sent us an email with the subject:  “NYC Redemption Run.” He was disappointed with his Chicago Marathon performance last year and wanted to make up for it in New York City. He did just that by dropping 29 minutes on a much harder course finishing in 3:38:28 (Official Results).

Bill’s Run SMART coach Rod Koborsi said afterwards, “Bill almost set a new PR at the half marathon mark so I think he could have run a little faster if he paced himself better early on. Still, this was a huge performance for him and he has a lot more to come.”

Caroline Curvan Shaves 35 Minutes Off NYC Marathon Best

Big congrats to Caroline Curvan for her performance at the New York City Marathon. Caroline bought a Jack Daniels’ Training Plan earlier this year and just wrote us about her results.

Just wanted to let you know that I completed the NYC marathon last weekend.  While I didn’t make my goal of 3:59, I did shave 6 minutes off my last marathon PR (and 35 minutes off my last NYC time,) for a 4:05.

I really liked following your plan (although I did make some adjustments which I now see why I shouldn’t have:)

Richard Garcia Sets New Half Marathon PR Despite High Temps

Despite temperatures near 80 degrees, Run SMART client Richard Garcia managed to set a new half marathon PR in San Antonio last weekend. Richard finished 3rd in his age group in 1:19:22, a new personal best by over two minutes (Full Results).

Richard purchased a 15-week marathon training plan with a goal of running 2:50 so he’s well on track to reach his goal at the Dallas White Rock Marathon on December 4th.

Good luck, Richard!

J Ro Keeps Rolling

Run SMART client John Robinson of Savannah, GA set a new PR at the inaugural Rock N Roll Savannah Half Marathon on November 5th, running 1:28:49 good for 79th place out of over 14,000 racers. Robinson came to The Run SMART Project in spring of 2009 with a 1:44 half marathon PR. Last weekend was his 10th PR performance in that time, having set personal bests in every race distance from 5k to the marathon.

“I knew breaking 1:30 was the next goal with the half but I couldn’t tell if it would be this race or his next attempt in January. He nailed it and we both couldn’t be happier,” said coach Mike Smith. (more…)

14-Year Old Holds Her Own Against Division I Competition

Run SMART client Meghan Lockett, 14 years of age, competed unattached in the Crimson Classic XC Invitational at the University of Alabama last weekend. She held her own against the much older and experienced female runners finishing 28th overall out of 203 finishers. Her time was 18:24, a 21-second PR for 5k! (Full Results)

It’s difficult enough for a freshman in college (typically 18 years of age) to transition into Division I level competition, but for a 14-year old to jump in a major Division I Invitational and run with the top runners in the field is truly incredible. She’s an amazing talent.

This week Josh emailed us with his results, “Don’t know if this has ever happened in your coaching career, but I nailed your prescribed target time for Chicago to the second. Pretty crazy.  Gotta say, I didn’t think it was possible.  I’m now a true believer in Run SMART Project methodology. I’ll be back for my next race!”
